Preparing to Start Your Alberta MBA

“Congratulations on your decision to become a part of the Alberta MBA family. As cliché as it may sound, your experience in the MBA program is truly what you make of it. Your time in the MBA program (especially your first semester) will be challenging. Two tips that have worked for me include:

  • Focus on YOUR priorities – people pursue an MBA for many different reasons: focus on yours.
  • Make time to do the things you love to do.

I look forward to meeting you and wish you the best as you begin your MBA.”

“Identify a “time out” activity that helps you unwind from a long or stressful day. Exercise? Visiting with friends? Binge watching a few episodes of your favourite Netflix series? Catching up on celebrity gossip? Whatever it is, take note of it. You will be working very hard throughout the duration of your MBA degree, and the way you prioritize and recharge during your down time will be just as important to your success as the way you prioritize and perform in your course work and extracurricular activities. I encourage you to come into the program with an awareness of what your best “time out” activity is and the signs/symptoms you experience in yourself when you are due for a break so that you can be mindful and proactive with managing your energy and stress.”

“The MBA is a very exciting step in your career.  It’s also a very busy time with classes, group projects, networking events, and countless opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities.  With that in mind, my piece of advice for the summer is to try and take some time to unwind and relax prior to the start of the MBA.   Not only would you get to charge up your batteries and get ready to start the MBA fresh, but it would also be a great opportunity to reflect on why you are coming into the MBA program and what you truly want to accomplish during the program.   From the start of the program, the demands on your time will grow very quickly, so having a clear vision on what you want to accomplish during the program will allow you to focus your efforts in the areas that are going to be most beneficial to you.”

“I believe the best thing you can do to prepare to arrive on campus is have all your tech (laptop, cell phone, etc.) purchased and ready to go on the first day of orientation. These are things you will use every day. Be ready to stretch yourself and step outside your comfort zone, but have fun doing that at the same time.”

  1. Hi,
This is Lydia. I am currently in Nigeria. My background is in Food science and Tech, and MSC Occupational health and safety. I worked in the food industry for 2 years, and then taught science in secondary school for 5 years. For the last 6 years I have been involved in my Family business doing procurement and marketing of our products.
My career path now is leaning towards business. So, I am considering doing an MBA program with Alberta School of Business. Your posts has been of great help.
